First Stop … the Isle of Mull

So, here we are on the 15th January 2018, heading off on a Caledonian MacBrayne ferry to the Isle of Mull, on our first formal visit of the AfRIS project. Due to the nature of the project, there will be a good deal of travelling for our mobile outreach team, but the stunning scenery we are bound to encounter will make each journey a joy and an adventure. After meeting Scott (one of the teams science communicators) from a flight into Glasgow, we wound our way through glens and mountains towards the busy port town of Oban, where we caught the regular ferry to Craignure on the Isle of Mull. The above image was taken whilst passing the southern tip of the Isle of Lismore – an island we’ll be visiting later in the year. The stormy looking clouds were a portent of the heavy hail showers and snow we were to encounter on our drive along single-track roads towards the small community of Bunessan on the south-eastern tip of Mull. Exciting times. More about that later.
