Description:

We stayed overnight at a small guesthouse in Gutcher on Yell, which is adjacent to the ferry terminal for Unst … the most northerly island in the whole UK and our destination for today. Whilst waiting for the ferry, we were treated to the sight of an otter scavenging for shellfish in the bay and nearby river, and were surprised at how close it allowed us to get. The arrival of the ferry interrupted our wildlife moment, and 10 minutes later we were on Unst for the 10 minute drive to Baltasound Junior High School … the most northerly school in the UK. We received a warm welcome, and spent the day working with the P4 (age 8) to S2 (age 13) groups … some 38 pupils in total. Apart from Solar System session, which only the P4-P7s did, all pupils undertook the same modules of Observing the Night Sky, Nature of Light, Space Exploration, and finished the day with hunting for asteroids on PCs and laptops. The sunshine stayed for most of the day, and allowed us to enjoy the dramatic scenery of Unst.
