Description:

After a reasonable overnight ferry crossing from Aberdeen, we arrived in Lerwick (Shetland) at 7:30 am, and made a mad dash to catch the Yell ferry from Toft. The plan was for the team to split up today, with Scott working with Burravoe Primary School on the south end of Yell, and Chris working with Cullivoe Primary in the far north of the island … some 19 miles away. Thankfully the ferry connection allowed us to make a fairly early start, allowing us the full day with both schools. Both primaries were small, with 12 and 18 pupils respectively, but seemed very much at the heart of their remote communities. We started with the standard Earth, Sun and Moon module, followed by a look at the Solar System, with the associated hands-on activity. Being a coastal community, Burravoe opted to look at gravity (including tides) and the nature of light after lunch, whilst Cullivoe’s interest lay with robotic telescopes and space exploration. After a cloudy start, the cloud soon dispersed and we were treated to a few days of sunshine whilst on Shetland.
