Description:
Sgoil nan Loch (or Loch School) was the destination for our second day on the Isle of Lewis. Being the biggest school of the week, the two AfRIS presenters had to run parallel sessions throughout the day to ensure that pupils had several hours of talks and activities. We started the day by splitting between the P1-2 class group, who looked at the ‘Solar System’, and P3-4, who undertook the ‘Stars and Constellations’ module. The younger group came up with some excellent planet designs and names – as seen in the above image. Scott then ran a 30 minute ‘Nature of Light’ talk in the main hall to the P5-7 group, whilst Chris hosted an ‘Ask the Astronomer’ session with the P3-4 pupils. To take us up to lunchtime, we had the P7s working on the ‘Robotic Telescopes’ activity, whilst P5-6 looked at gravity by way of a few practical demonstrations. After a hearty lunch, we continued with parallel ‘Stars and Constellations’ sessions for the P5-6 class sets, and then finished the day with our ‘Space Exploration’ talk in the gym to the whole school. Glad to say that there was lots of enthusiasm, good knowledge on display and some great questions.
