Description:

Our visit to Sandwick Junior High School was the first one of the new school year, a trip that had us visiting both Shetland and Orkney. We ere straight off the overnight ferry, but still had plenty of time to set-up before the 9am start. We spent the morning with P6 and P7, and split them into two groups so that we could keep numbers abit more manageable for the ‘Stars and Constellations’ and ‘Solar System’ workshops. All of P6 to S2 got together in the main hall (pictured above) just before lunch for Scott’s ‘Space Exploration’ talk. After a hearty lunch chatting to staff, we switched our attention to S1 and S2, who worked through two computer-based activities: ‘Robotic Telescopes’ and ‘Hunting for Asteroids’. We ended the day with a look at the nature of light, although technology decided to throw a little spanner in the works. The day over, it was time to relocate 43 miles to the northern part of the mainland for our next visit.
