Description:

The end of January saw us heading to the Kintyre peninsular and the Isle of Gigha. It had intended to be a two day visit, but after being approached by the teacher of a small school on the banks of Loch Caolisport, we decided to throw in a quick afternoon visit to Achahoish Primary school en route to Kintyre. We arrived around lunchtime, and managed to set-up whilst the pupils were tucking in to macaroni cheese. The first session was an introduction (and recap for some older students) of the Earth, Sun and Moon. There is no doubt that children are always amazed by the sheer size and majesty of the Sun. We followed up with the Solar System module, the end of which incorporates our play-doh planets activity. The last session had an open invite for parents to join us for some nature of light demonstrations, and we were glad to see a few additional faces joining us for some infra-red and ultra-violet trickery. We were pleased to see that the pupils seemed a little more adept at answering some of the science questions than their parents. It was certainly a flying visit, but we hope it proved of some benefit to the extended community of Achahoish.
